The Australian women’s water polo team has won silver at the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament following a narrow 5-6 loss to the USA.

Featuring seven NSWIS athletes, the Stingers were down 0-3 at quarter time but enjoyed a spirited comeback in the second quarter to head into the half-time break down just 3-4.

However the Australians were unable to draw level with the Americans as both teams each scored a goal in the third and final quarters, ending the match at 6-5 in favour of the USA.

NSWIS athlete Keesja Gofers scored twice with Nicola Zagame also scoring a goal. They were joined in the team by fellow NSWIS athletes Lea Yanitsas, Hannah Buckling, Holly Lincoln-Smith, Bronte Halligan and Isobel Bishop.

The next major tournament the Stingers will contest is the FINA World League Final in China from 7-12 June before the Olympic Games in August.
