The Australian women’s water polo team has won silver at the 2014 FINA World Cup following a tough 6-10 loss to arch-rivals USA.

Featuring NSWIS athletes Jayde Appel, Hannah Buckling, Isobel Bishop, Morgan Baxter and Keesja Gofers, the Stingers scored the opening goal of the match before the USA asserted their dominance, leading 3-1 at quarter-time before extending the lead to 7-3 at half-time.

The third quarter saw the Americans score another three goals to lead the Stingers 10-5, and despite the Australian’s best efforts in the final quarter they could only manage one goal before the match ended with Australia taking silver.

The silver medal is the Stingers’ third medal of the international season following gold at the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup in May and bronze at the FINA World League Super Final in June.

Meanwhile, the Australian men’s water polo team has been named ahead of the men’s World Cup, with eight NSWIS athletes making the cut.

Included in the team are James Clark, Richie Campbell, Nathan Power, Mitch Emery, Tyler Martin, Johnno Cotterill, Jarrod Gilchrist and Aidan Roach.

The 2014 FINA Men’s World Cup takes place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 19-24 August.
