It was a super Sunday for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with three NSWIS athletes winning gold and a further four NSWIS athletes taking bronze on the fourth day of competition.

The pool continued to be a gold mine for Australian athletes, with James Magnussen (@james_maggie91) taking gold in the men’s 100m freestyle to win his first individual Commonwealth Games gold medal. Magnussen, a member of the victorious 4x100m freestyle relay team, won gold in 48.11 to outlast compatriots Cam McEvoy and Tommaso D’Orsogna, making it a clean sweep for the Australian trio.

Magnussen’s place on the top of the podium was matched by fellow NSWIS athlete David McKeon (@DavoMcKeon), who triumphed as a member of the Australian men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team. Swimming the second leg, McKeon helped the Australian quartet to a new Games’ record of 7:07.38 en route to gold.

Elsewhere in Glasgow, long jumper Jodi Elkington dominated the field to clinch gold in the women’s T37/38 long jump. Elkington secured victory before her final attempt, with her final jump being her longest at a wind assisted 4.39m. All of Elkington’s six jumps were long enough to win the gold medal.

There was further medal joy for Australia’s women’s table tennis team, winning bronze in the team event. NSWIS athletes Zhenhua Dederko and Ziyu Zhang were both part of the victorious team as Australia defeated India in the bronze medal match.

Joining the table tennis team as bronze medal winners was the Australian rugby sevens team, following dramatic scenes at the Ibrox Stadium. The team, featuring NSWIS athletes Ed Jenkins (@edjenkins86) and Greg Jeloudev, came from 19 points down against Wales in the quarter-final to secure a semi-final berth against New Zealand, before a tough 7-19 semi-final loss. The Australians then moved to the bronze medal match where they made light work of Samoa 24-0 to win bronze, a solid result just two years away from the sport’s Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro.

The NSWIS medal tally now stands at eight gold, one silver and five bronze medals after four days of competition.
