The 2013 Australian Short Course Swimming Championships concluded over the weekend with a number of NSWIS athletes being crowned national champions.

Short course specialist Kenneth To was the standout NSWIS performer of the meet, bagging five gold medals from as many events. The 2012 short course world champion triumphed in the men’s 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m individual medley, 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle, with fellow NSWIS athletes Matthew and Andrew Abood winning silver and bronze respectively in the 50m freestyle. Matthew Abood also won silver in the men’s 50m breaststroke.

Short course specialist Bobby Hurley was also in form, winning gold in the men’s 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke, and bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle, while David Arnamnart took bronze in the men’s 50m backstroke.

Olympian David McKeon cruised home in his pet event, the men’s 400m freestyle to take gold.

Rising star Laura Crockart showed why she is one to watch with gold medals in the women’s 400m freestyle, 800m and 1500m freestyle as Melissa Mitchell took silver in the women’s 50m freestyle and bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle, and Jordan White finished with bronze in the women’s 200m butterfly.

Fresh from the 2013 IPC Swimming Championships in Canada, NSWIS swimmers Taylor Corry, Maddison Elliott and Amanda Fowler were also on song in the multi-class (MC) events.

Corry won gold in the women’s 100m backstroke MC and 100m freestyle MC; Elliott took top honours in the women’s 50m freestyle MC and Fowler triumphed in the women’s 50m breaststroke MC, with each athlete also picking up a variety of minor medals.


World championship swimmer Sean Russo picked up gold in the men’s 100m backstroke MC as well as a further two silver and one bronze medal, with fellow NSWIS athlete Mitchell Kilduff winning silver in the men’s 50m freestyle MC.
