The Australian Dolphins swimming team has been announced for the 2016 Olympic Games, with one NSWIS athlete earning automatic selection.

Youngster Jacob Hansford will make his Olympic debut in Rio after finishing fifth in the men’s 200m freestyle at the recent Australian Swimming Championships.

Hansford’s efforts in clocking 1:48.23 were good enough for a spot on the Australian men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team, an event in which the Australian quartet finished fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Fellow NSWIS James Magnussen and Matthew Abood have both been identified as members of the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay team after finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the men’s 100m freestyle final.

The relay team missed out on the top-12 at last year’s world championships and are awaiting a quota spot from FINA, which is expected to be finalised in May. Once a quota place is confirmed both Magnussen and Abood will be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee for selection.

The Olympic Games begin on 5 August.
