The official London Olympic test event for women’s water polo kicked off overnight, while the men’s hockey test event continued.

The Australian women’s water polo team, featuring three NSWIS athletes, made the perfect start to their tournament by downing hosts Great Britain 10-4.

NSWIS athlete Nicola Zagame scored two goals for the Stingers, with Holly Lincoln-Smith also strong in the pool. Australian goalkeeper Alicia McCormack made 13 crucial saves to guide the team to victory.

The Stingers will face Hungary tonight.

Meanwhile, the Australian men’s hockey team suffered a shock 2-3 loss to Germany in their test event after defeating India 3-0 in the first match.

The Kookaburras took an early 1-0 lead before being run down by the Germans in controversial circumstances, after it appeared an Australian had been fouled before Germany scored their equaliser.

Australia now faces hosts Great Britain on Saturday night.
