Day one of the 2012 Olympic Games saw Australia win its first gold medal in London, with plenty of NSWIS athletes still in the mix for medals after a solid opening day.

Table tennis player Justin Han was one of the first athletes in action, competing in the men’s singles. After a solid 4-2 win in the preliminary rounds, Han lost his first round match 0-4 to Iranian Noshad Alamiyan. Despite the loss Han will contest the team event later in the schedule.

The first of the NSWIS swimmers got their campaign underway in the London aquatic centre. Daniel Tranter finished eighth in his men’s 400m individual medley heat, while David McKeon finished fifth in his heat of the men’s 400m freestyle. Although both missed the final they still have opportunities in the men’s 200m individual medley, and 4x200m freestyle relay, respectively.

Seven NSWIS athletes competed on the first morning of the rowing at Eton Dorney, with all still chances at medals. Dan Noonan moved into the semi-final of the men’s quad scull; the men’s eight, featuring NSWIS Toby Lister, Francis Hegerty, Matthew Ryan, Sam Loch and Nicholas Purnell moved to the repechage of their event, and Amy Clay will compete in the repechage of women’s quad scull.

Shooter Daniel Repacholi finished 28th overall in the men’s 10m air pistol, but still has two events to come, in which he can aim for gold, while in equestrian the Australian team sits in first place after the dressage segment of the three day event. NSWIS athletes Andrew Hoy, who is creating history by competing at his seventh Olympic Games, and Chris Burton are placed fourth and eighth, respectively, in the individual event.

Sunday’s action is highlighted by two medal chances for NSWIS athletes. James Magnussen and Eamon Sullivan kick start their campaigns with the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, with the final taking place on Monday morning, while Amanda Spratt contests the women’s cycling road race.
