The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) is pleased to announce a four year extension of its partnership with Principal Partner ClubsNSW in the lead up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The extended partnership, which will see ClubsNSW provide over $1 million of annual support, comes on the back of a successful London campaign for NSWIS scholarship holders who won a combined total of 16 gold, 14 silver and 21 bronze medals at the Olympic & Paralympic Games.

ClubsNSW has supported the Institute since its inception in 1996, providing over $17 million in support for five summer Olympic & Paralympic Games, four winter Olympic & Paralympic Games and four Commonwealth Games campaigns.

NSWIS Chief Executive Charles Turner said the extension of the partnership is vital for the Institute’s ongoing success.

“The extension of the Institute’s partnership with ClubsNSW ensures the NSWIS will continue to be able to provide world class coaching, servicing and facilities to scholarship holders as they aim for success at the highest level.”

ClubsNSW Chairman Peter Newell OAM said he hoped the funding announcement would assist athletes with their training for the 2016 Rio Olympic & Paralympic Games.

“ClubsNSW has extended its financial support of NSWIS through to 2016 so that athletes can continue their preparations with confidence that they have access to the best coaching money can buy. Clubs have been the backbone of junior sport for more than 100 years so it seemed a logical decision for ClubsNSW to extend its support of the NSWIS for another four years.”

Adding to the financial support, the extended partnership will also see the continuation of various initiatives including the NSWIS/ClubsNSW Employ an Athlete Program, which provides NSWIS athletes the opportunity to further their careers outside the sporting arena with employment opportunities at ClubsNSW member clubs.
