Three NSWIS athletes have been part of an Australian sailing contingent that recently contested the Sailing World Cup Hyères event.

Racing in heavy mistral conditions, that lived up to what was expected of the venue, NSWIS Laser sailor Tom Burton did enough to be sitting sixth overall in the standings after two races, in what he said were tough conditions.

“It was a good day for us in general, but it was one of those days, fresh and frightening and pretty cold,” Burton said.

Following an incident with his rudder, Burton fell from fifth to ninth place in the second race, a position he held until the end.

In the Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17 class only one race was sailed, NSWIS athletes Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin finish amidst a carnage laden race. The duo scored a credible ninth place among the 14 finishers, 19 boats retired.
