The 2015 Universiade came to a close last week in Gwangju, South Korea with eight NSWIS athletes bringing home medals.

The highlight of the event came in the women’s water polo competition as the Australian team defeated Canada for gold. NSWIS athletes Pascalle Casey, Isobel Bishop, Montana Perkins, Lena Mihailovic and FIona Walsh were all part of the squad that won 6-3 in a penalty shootout, with Mihailovic converting her penalty en route to victory.

Also in the pool, NSWIS swimmers Jacob Hansford and Ami Matsuo both featured on the medal dais. Hansford collected silver as part of the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team while also adding bronze in the men’s 200m freestyle, while Matsuo picked up bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle.

Elsewhere, Michelle Jenneke won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles, finishing 0.16 behind the Jamaican winner.

Australia finished 15th on the medal tally with four gold, three silver and 12 bronze for a total of 19 medals.
