Connecting athletes with their coaches should be simple. But for equestrian athletes in Australia who have overseas coaches, it can often prove difficult.

The NSW Institute of Sport was recently approached to assist in delivering a remote coaching solution for equestrian athletes in Western Sydney.

NSWIS Manager of ITO & Data Analytics Greg Baxter provided Equestrian Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport with a solution to bring remote coaching to life.

Using a powerful mobile broadband device, an iPad and a mobile device, athletes have had their coaches watch and coach them during training – just as well as if they were in the paddock together.

With support staff filming the training session and the athlete on a hands-free phone connection, the coach is able to watch from wherever they are in the world and provide instant feedback.

The success of this small yet important project is a reflection on how each department at the NSW Institute of Sport impacts athlete performance directly.
