The NSWIS winter athletes have made history over the weekend winning world cup medals and Crystal Globes while boxer Kaye Scott claimed a world championship silver medal.

Valentino Shreds History Books

New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarship holder Valentino Guseli created history when he claimed the 2023 FIS Snowboarding Park and Pipe Crystal Globe.

The 17-year-old from the NSW South Coast became the first snowboarder in history to win a world cup medal in all three disciplines of Park and Pipe in a single season.

Baff Finishes Season With Golden Glow

NSWIS scholarship holder Josie Baff finished the snowboarding season just as she started it – with a gold medal.

Baff, from Jindabyne, defeated Austria’s Pia Zerkhold and tw0-time Olympic medallist, Chloe  Trespeuch of France in the big final of the world cup meet held at Mt. St Anne, Canada.

“It’s really, really awesome,” said Baff. “I had a good start for the first time today . . . I just tried to stay calm and patient, and it worked.”

Baff will now head to Europe where the 20-year-old will compete in the junior world championships.

Coady Bags Third World Cup Medal

NSWIS scholarship holder Tess Coady has wrapped up her competition (pictured above) season in style, with a silver medal performance in the slopestyle event her third podium performance of the season.

Great Scott – Kaye Wins World Silver

NSWIS scholarship holder Kaye Scott (photographed on far right) finished the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi with a silver medal.

The Australian lost to Russia’s Anastasiia Demurchian in the 70-kilo category. While Scott conceded it wasn’t her night during the final, she had good reason to be pleased with her overall performance.

“I had a great campaign at the tournament,” Scott wrote on Facebook. “4 hard fights including a win against the number 2 in the world. A silver medal is a HUGE achievement and I’m proud of it.

Dale wins latest duel by two centimetres 

Small margins have separated Australian long jump duo NSWIS scholarship holder Samantha Dale and Brooke Buschkuehl throughout 2023, and their duel continued at the Brisbane Track classic when Dale prevailed by two centimetres.

Meanwhile, NSWIS scholarship holder Rohan Browning’s winning streak in Australia was derailed by New Zealand’s king of sprints Eddie Osei-Nketia. Osei-Nketia, who is relocating to Hawaii to begin a career in gridiron, won in a time of 10.29-seconds.

 

World Champion’s Goal Hasn’t Changed

World champion high jumper and NSWIS scholarship holder, Eleanor Patterson said she’s on track to defend her title despite being on crutches after fracturing a bone in her foot.

The next generation of Australian rowing stars have been named to take to the water for the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from July 19-23 and among them are four NSWIS athletes.
