Two NSWIS scholarship holders are crowned world champions as NSWIS divers win world cup medals and a world class strength science program is unveiled.

Jemma Smith Crowned World Champion

NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarship holder Jemma Smith has won Australia’s first women’s senior title in ocean ski racing at the 2022 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Portugal.

“I’m really stoked with that, I came into this race not really knowing how I would go because we haven’t raced internationally for a long time,” Jemma said.

Amanda Crowned World Champion

NSWIS scholarship holders Amanda Reid and Gordon Allan have won multiple medals at the 2022 UCI Para Cycling Road World Championships. Amanda was crowned world champion in the C2 500m time trial and won a silver medal in the  C3 3000m IP. Gordon won bronze in the C2 1000m time trial. More results are to come.

NSW Pride Edge Out Thundersticks

NSWIS scholarship holders have made a major contribution to the NSW Pride teams who have won their first home fixtures of the Sultana Bran Hockey One League holding out a fast finishing Perth Thundertsticks outfits, 4-3.

“We really had to dig deep, especially at the end. Perth really came at us but as you can see, Dylan Martin ran down three at the end and that’s just how we play,” NSWIS scholarship holder and Pride forward Ehren Hazell said after the match.

Diving World Cup Bronze

NSWIS scholarship holders Brittany O’Brien and Nikita Hains along with Jaxon Bowshire and Lachlan Cronin won a bronze medal in the mixed 3m & 10m event at the Diving World Cup in Berlin.

Brittany O’Brien finished fourth in the 3m springboard and Nikita Hains seventh in the 10m platforms.

Stingers Squad Announced

Eight NSWIS athletes including Zoe Arancini, Hayley Ballesty, Bronte Halligan, Sienna Hearn, Matilda Kearns, Genevieve Longman, Amy Ridge and Ruby Swadling are on their way to Spain after the Stingers won the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Intercontinental Cup in March and earned their place in the super finals.

World Class Strength Science Program Unveiled

The strength and conditioning (S&C) team at the NSWIS is at the beginning of a comprehensive, two-year structured learning program in strength science.

“By the end of the 2024 Olympic cycle, the NSWIS S&C team will have greatly enhanced their strength science expertise,” NSWIS Head of S&C Simon Harries said.

Snowboard – Big Air

NSWIS scholarship holder and Beijing 2022 snowboarder Valentino Guseli is off and running on the 2022-23 Big Air World Cup season, finishing sixth in the final on the weekend in Chur, Switzerland.

All eight finalists receive three jumps each, with their two best counting towards their total score, and Valentino landed the third best individual jump (83.75) of the night with his back triple 1620 weddle.
