Wheelchair track & road athlete Madison de Rozario has shone at the GIO Summer Down Under Series in Canberra, breaking a world record in her 800m event.

The NSWIS Scholarship Holder broke the T53 800m world record, clocking 1:45.53 to set the new world’s best time. The record was previously held by American Chelsea McClammer in a time of 1:45.90 and set in 2017.

De Rozario was jubilant about the achievement.

“It’s amazing, I actually haven’t had much time to think about it as I went to bed soon after the race!” said de Rozario, speaking to NSWIS this morning.

“It’s something I’ve spoken about with [my coach Louise Sauvage], something that we thought we could achieve.

“I just wanted to put down the best race possible and to get a world record is amazing.

“Last year I equalled the 1500m record, so it’s great to go one better and set a record outright”.

De Rozario has one more day of competition at the Canberra International Track Meet, which forms part of the GIO Summer Down Under Series, the highest profile wheelchair sporting event in Australia.
